Benedictine Programs and Services

Backgrounder

Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Benedictine Programs and Services is a nationally recognized, accredited and cost-effective educational living and learning environment for children and adults with special needs.  Established in 1959 and managed by the Sisters of St. Benedict, Benedictine cares for 180 children and adults ages 5 through 60+ with intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, and autism.

The Benedictine School

Led by Founding Sister and Executive Director Sister Jeannette Murray, O.S.B., for the past 50 years, Benedictine’s students experience a holistic, spiritual environment filled with enthusiasm, love and dedication for their overall wellness. Since 1959, the Benedictine School has provided comprehensive services for 1,000+ individuals including those with families and those with no meaningful family support.

Providing day, residential and vocational programs, The Benedictine School staff – comprised of special education teachers, therapists and medical personnel – design educational plans to care for individuals throughout different life stages. Children, ages 5 to 21, are welcomed into The Benedictine School where an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) is continually tailored to meet their needs throughout the course of their stay. This includes a diverse and integrated array of therapies, services and programs.

On 500 acres of farmland in Ridgely, Maryland, The Benedictine School’s classrooms and residences offer students a loving, home-like atmosphere. Social activities are important at the Benedictine School, as students learn beyond the classroom and discover ways to effectively manage their leisure time, including day trips to the beach, camping, ice shows, baseball and football games, photography, dances and community events.

In addition to academics, The Benedictine School prepares students for adult life with one of the most highly regarded vocational programs in the country, which places students in part-time community or on-campus jobs, appropriate to their level of ability.

The Benedictine Open Community Program

The Benedictine Open Community is a group home and vocational program where adults ages 22 to 60+ live in homes with peers and continue to work with the vocational program or in the community.  Those participating in the Open Community Program live in one of 27 state-licensed homes in Maryland or Delaware. Under the management of Open Community staff, the homes encourage responsibility, independence and integration into the wider community.

Individuals also participate in an effective vocational program. The Vocational Department provides services to the community utilizing the individuals' strengths and promoting self-determination. Every participant is provided vocational opportunities to develop their unique potential, experience fulfillment, and develop a sense of purpose. Many individuals are placed in appropriate part-time jobs in area businesses and volunteer opportunities, under the supervision of staff job coaches. Benedictine Graphics, with screen printing, embroidery, and commercial printing; a contract production area for product assembly, sorting and packaging; a local cleaning service; recycling services; and a florist shop all provide on-site vocational opportunities.

In addition to the opportunities provided to Benedictine's individuals, the Open Community offers an opportunity for the people who encounter them to come to an appreciation of the gifts and contributions of people with disabilities.

The Benedictine Foundation

Benedictine Programs and Services is an extremely cost-effective organization.  In fact, about 90 percent of funds donated go toward direct care of students and adults. With an operating budget of $20 million, Benedictine raises funds through donations and special events. The Benedictine Foundation secures the financial resources needed to ensure the future of Benedictine’s programs, services and other activities.
