18th Annual Benedictine Charity Golf Tournament Raises Record $62,000

On Friday, October 27, The Benedictine School of Ridgely hosted their 18th Annual Charity Golf Classic at Harbourtowne Golf Resort and Conference Center in St. Michaels. The event raised over $62,000 to support the 200 children and adults with disabilities at Benedictine Programs and Services. In its eighteen years, the tournament has raised over $660,000 for Benedictine. Benedictine’s Director, Sister Jeannette Murray, O.S.B., said, “This tournament brings some of Benedictine’s best friends back together year after year. These golfers, sponsors and organizers are a part of our family, a network of support which is a great blessing to us all.”

The winning team was Bill Brogan, Gary Rockwell, Sissy VanSant, and Dwayne VanSant. The men’s longest drive was by John Shannahan, and the longest women’s drive was by Jennifer Freeman. As usual, the event had been sold out for months, and 140 golfers played. Golfers received premium gift bags, a great brunch and a splendid dinner featuring a raw bar of unlimited oysters and clams on the half-shell. The afternoon rain may have cut short the actual game, but the weather did not dampen the fun or the golfers’ enthusiastic generosity. The benefit auction offered attractive packages of golf outings, restaurant certificates, a weekend stay in New York City and luxury suite tickets to a Redskins game. Other exciting features were a 50/50 raffle, a drawing for a spectacular “Wheelbarrow of Cheer” and a chance to sink a 50’ putt for $10,000 in cash. For these and many other reasons, the Benedictine Charity Golf Classic is one of the region’s premiere golf tournaments.

“The personal care and individual attention that Benedictine provides our kids with their special needs does not come cheap,” said Sister Jeannette. “We count on the folks who support an event like this tournament to make it possible to improve the lives of more children who need it.”
