The Functional Academic Team

The primary focus of this group of classes is to improve functional academic skills. Each student’s lessons are tailored to their individual needs. Functional Academics are taught in the areas of reading, math, and writing. Reading goals may include basic sight vocabulary, survival signs, comprehension skills and using maps, graphs and labels. Math goals may include basic computation skills, money skills, telling time, check writing, and utilizing a calendar. Writing goals may include writing personal information, or writing sentences and paragraphs.

Students also work on social skills and interactions along with developing leisure skills. Leisure activities may include card and board game play, computer usage, art projects and hobby development.

Providing vocational training is another component of the program. Skills are taught in the classroom that will help the student’s success in the work place. Prime vocational goals focus on good habits and attitudes. Students work on jobs in their classrooms and at various on-campus sites. In conjunction with the vocational training department, all functional academic skills may be presented in the classroom, other on-campus sites, or in the community.

There are currently seven Functional Academic Classes.
