Assistive Technology

The Assistive Technology (AT) Department oversees and provides the coordination of the evaluation, installation, and ongoing maintenance of assistive technology devices used by students, students’ families, and staff. The AT Department ensures effective daily operation of assistive technology hardware and software, including problem determination and resolution. The AT/IT Department maintains and repairs connectivity and communication with all servers within the campus and our Internet Service Provider. The AT Department is also responsible for ordering, receiving, storing, and inventorying lab software and equipment, in addition to developing campus-wide materials.

Computer Lab

The Computer Lab is a multi media, multi purpose area used for student instruction and staff training. In addition to computer availability and software programs to design training and instructional schematics, multi media equipment is also accessible to enhance these presentations. The Computer Lab houses at least 10 computers with Internet availability.

Computers

The AT/IT Department assures that all computers used by students and staff are kept in optimal running condition by; performing regular testing, configuring, installing, updating and repairing any computer related problems across campus settings. The AT/IT Department is responsible for maintaining a rotation schedule for replacement of computers in accordance with budgetary guidelines.

Staff Training

The AT Department is responsible for providing technical support to staff including explaining the use of adaptive software and the use of assistive equipment. Training staff in computer systems and software is provided individually or in group settings. The AT Department also advises and assists staff on access issues, and develops quick references for various software for staff/student use. Facilitation of the use and availability of multi media equipment as required for presentations, meetings, and campus-wide events.

Student AT Evaluations

The Assistive Technology Department is responsible for assessing the communicative ability of students in their daily living situations, vocational and educational settings. Assessment efforts are focused at determining appropriate communication system adaptations and supports to increase a student’s communicative intent in different environments. The AT Department maintains knowledge of the newest equipment available to consumers and makes recommendations regarding the identification and purchase of appropriate devices for that individual given specific goals and needs. The maintenance and repairs of all augmentative devices both high tech and low tech are completed by the Assistive Technology Department.
