Occupational Therapy

Goal of Occupational Therapy:

The goal of Occupational Therapy at The Benedictine School is to enable a student to maximize his/her independence within the school and community settings. The Occupational Therapist works with the student to improve visual motor skills, fine and gross motor skills, visual perceptual skills, and sensory processing. The occupational therapist also looks at basic self-help skills, such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and higher level skills required for vocational and group home settings.

Occupational Therapy Process:

Students may be admitted to The Benedictine School with an existing IEP that includes occupation therapy services or the IEP team may make a recommendation for an occupational therapy evaluation. If an evaluation concludes that the student would benefit from skilled occupational therapy services, the IEP team will meet to discuss occupational therapy recommendations and approve the proposed goals and objectives.

Once the IEP is approved to include occupational therapy, services are then provided in one or more of the following methods:

  • Direct one-on-one services within the therapeutic environment
  • Integrated services within the natural setting including, but not limited to: the classroom, dining room, pool area, Industrial Training Center (ITC), dorm, home economics, and sensory environments.
  • Co-treatment with other therapeutic services, such at PT, SLP and special educators, to establish generalization of skills to other environments
  • Consultative services to support student/staff through education
